Kawasaki USA, a manufacturer of outdoor equipment and recreational vehicles, issued a recall on September 4, 2019 for of its off-highway vehicles. According to the manufacturer, this vehicle may carry a higher risk of crash and injuries.
The vehicles which are the subjects of the recall notice from Kawasaki are the Teryx and Teryx4. About 2,600 units have been produced. The notice was issued because of an incorrect joint assembly. If it malfunctions, the driver could lose control of the steering, which would likely lead to a crash and resulting injuries.
Models Being Recalled
The recall notice is for both the Teryx and Teryx4 for the model years 2019 and 2020. They come in many different colors, including orange, black, green, gray and camo with three different styles. They may have two or four seats and a rear box. They feature controls similar to an automobile. They were sold at Kawasaki dealers beginning in March 2019 through August 2019.
Anyone who owns one of these models should stop riding them immediately and contact Kawasaki to determine if their model is one being recalled. They can go online to www.kawasaki.com and click on Recalls to get more information or call (866) 802-9381 between 8 am and 5 pm PT Monday through Friday to find out how to handle their recall. Kawasaki is providing free repair for all vehicles affected by the notice.
The Dangers of ROV Accidents
Just like with a car, truck or SUV, there is a risk of a crash with a recreational off-road vehicle. These vehicles can go on rugged terrain, which makes them even more at risk for an accident. Kids can not only ride in them but in certain situations, they can even drive these ROVs.
Unlike a regular vehicle, ROVs have very little safety equipment. The models by Kawasaki consist of a steel frame and roof, but no other enclosure to protect from impact. Even though you are traveling at a slower speed in these off-road vehicles, the lighter weight enables them to launch into the air or rollover in a collision. In this situation where the person would lose control of the steering, the vehicle could hit a tree or other obstacle, causing the person to be ejected from the ROV. They could end up turning over and being pinned under the ROV.
Injuries may range from mild to severe in an off-road vehicle accident. Most commonly seen are injuries such as bruises and lacerations to the face, arms and elsewhere as well as fractures and broken bones. More severe injuries can occur and cause permanent disability. Many riders of ROVs are killed in accidents. One of the most serious consequences of an off-road vehicle accident is a brain injury. With around 1500 lbs. of curb weight, these vehicles can be dangerous if they turn over on a person.
No injuries have been reported with the Kawasaki recall, but it’s important for owners to pay serious attention about this risk and report it immediately.
