New cases of the lung illness which is being linked to vaping have been reported. The number has gone from 450 to 530 with more likely. At the same, Walmart made the announcement that vaping products and e-cigarettes would no longer be available at the retailer.
More Cases Reported
States and municipalities have started banning products, and the FDA may follow suit. Some bans are only for flavored products while others prevent the sale of any of these products.
Even with the new cases, investigators still don’t know the exact cause of the illness. No single compound or substance has been found in all the illnesses. Many of the patients have admitted to using THC for vaping, which is a component in cannabis. Others have combined that substance with nicotine.
Symptoms are similar to the flu with fevers, chills and coughing. Some patients report that they are short of breath or nauseous. These patients are often diagnosed with pneumonia, which is normally found in the elderly. However, many of the patients who come into the hospital with this illness are young and otherwise healthy. They may even be high school students.
It still isn’t known if there are long-term affects from the illness. However, there is an increased risk of death with the illness. So far, eight people have died.
The FDA and other organizations and businesses are taking action because of this situation. Walmart has decided to stop selling vaping products. This is a big step to prevent access to these products. The FDA may begin regulating these products soon, which will limit the manufacturers and retailers while protecting the public.
Changes in Access to Vaping Products
While experts don’t believe that this is necessarily the end for vaping products and e-cigarettes, it does appear they will be regulated and monitored more closely in the future. There are significant health concerns, especially since so many of the users are underage kids.
Even with regulations in place, there is still concern about how teens and others will get the products. There is a significant black market that provides these products to users with THC and other substances which are illegal to sell. Often people buy from the black market or get them from friends and have no idea what is really in the products.
This epidemic is happening all over the country. People get sick in metropolitan areas and in less urban locations as well. The FDA and CDC along with other organizations are advising people to stop vaping until a cause for the lung disease can be determined. It’s not known if any of these products are safe until the investigation has been completed and a single cause can be identified.
If anyone begins to feel sick with no known reason, they should go to the doctor right away, especially if they have been vaping. This is a serious illness and can lead to death. Just because you are healthy with no current health problems, it doesn’t mean you aren’t at a higher risk if you vape.
