Over 35,000 vehicles of the Mazda3 models have been recalled for a safety issue. This recall is for 2019 and 2020 model years and impacts both the sedan and hatchback. The automatic emergency braking system is the component involved in the recall.
Defect of the AEB System
The AEB may engage while a person is driving the Mazda3, which could cause the car to stop suddenly and result in a rear-end collision. Even though Mazda has not reported any injuries or deaths from the recall, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has noted one injury from a single crash caused by the recalled component.
The automatic emergency braking system is a valuable component of modern vehicles, but it can also be a hazard when it doesn’t work correctly. It is an important recall to pay attention to and get repaired ASAP. According to Mazda, the driver in one of these vehicles may hear a warning sound when the AEB randomly engages. They may also see a warning message on the instrument cluster display. To repair the issue, Mazda will need to update the software for the AEB system.
The software will kick in when it detects an obstacle appearing in front of the vehicle while it’s in motion. With the error, there is no obstacle, but the system applies the brakes automatically.
Mazda is notifying owners by February 17, 2020, and they can take their vehicles to a Mazda dealership for the software update at no charge. If an owner hasn’t received notification and is concerned about the issue, they can contact customer service with Mazda at 800-222-5500.
Another option is to visit the NHTSA website and put in the vehicle identification number. All recalls for that vehicle will be listed. However, new recalls are added, so it is a good idea to check back at different times.
Similar Recalls for the AEB System
A similar issue occurred with Nissan when Rogue models from 2017 and 2018 began experiencing unintended braking. A total of 87 complaints had been received by the NHTSA for the issue. Due to this problem, the agency has begun a review of 675,000 models for the AEB system. The manufacturer sent notice to all owners of affected models early in 2019.
Some owners have shut off the AEB system due to the malfunction, which can create other problems. When the system works correctly, it can help the driver avoid hitting another vehicle or other obstacles.
Suddenly stopping in the middle of traffic can cause the recalled vehicle to be hit from behind if the other party isn’t able to stop in time. A rear-end collision can cause serious injury, especially if the person was traveling at a higher rate of speed. Neck and back injuries are common with rear-end collisions. A person may also suffer from a fracture, broken bones and other injuries. They may be deemed to be at fault for the accident since their vehicle stopped without notice.
