Jeep has had to recall both the Wrangler and Gladiator because of an increased risk of fire from a clutch pressure plate. These vehicles may overheat which could cause a fire to start.
The models affected include Jeep Wranglers from 2018 to 2020 and Gladiator pickups from 2020. However, it only affects those with manual transmissions.
Clutch Pressure Plate Recall
The job of the clutch pressure plate is to transfer torque from the engine to the transmission. Due to continued friction, it may overheat which could result in the transmission case cracking. If the case cracks, the debris could make contact with ignition components, which might lead to a fire.
If the clutch begins to burn, the drive may notice a burning smell. The pedal for the clutch may move farther down before the plate breaks. Owners of the recalled vehicles will receive notification by the end of April. The manufacturer is developing the procedure for repair, which will include a new pressure plate.
To find out more about the recall or to determine if your model is included, you can contact the customer service at Chrysler at 800-853-1403. You can also talk to your local dealership, but they won’t be able to make any repairs until Jeep has developed the plan for repair.
Both the Wrangler and Gladiator are two easily identifiable vehicles with their boxed frame and trapezoidal wheel arches. They are known for being off-road vehicles, which requires a sturdy design and components to take on the additional performance challenges.
Gladiator Recalls
This isn’t the first recall for the new model in the Jeep lineup, the Gladiator. As the first Jeep truck and only open-air pickup on the market, the Gladiator has been the subject of another recall. This was for rear driveshafts that could have been assembled without grease in the monoblock joint, which could result in a fire risk from overheating. The driveshaft could also seize up and separate, which would lead to a road hazard.
For this recall, Jeep will replace the component at no cost to the owner. These are the only two recalls for the Gladiator at this time.
Wrangler Recalls
For the Wrangler, the 2020 model year has another recall for the lower control arm, which could separate from the axle because of improper welding. If it separates, this could increase the risk for a crash. This notice is expected to begin in March 2020.
The risk of a crash and risk for fire are two of the most common and most serious dangers with defected components on vehicles. With a crash risk, the driver and passengers may suffer mild to severe injury, depending on the speed and other factors. With a risk of fire, the biggest danger is explosion with flying debris that could hit people in the area. The passengers of the vehicle may also suffer burns from a fire that could lead to long-term treatment and recovery.
