Tainted Male Enhancement Supplements
According to the FDA, more than 25 products like Gold Rhino 25000, Krazzy Rhino, and Platinum Rhino are tainted with hidden ingredients that may pose a threat to consumers. Some of these male enhancement supplements contain similar ingredients to those found in FDA approved erectile dysfunction medications including tadalafil and sildenafil. The government watchdog agency said it’s been investigating hidden raw ingredients used to make Rhino supplements since 2015.
Consumers Warn of Dangerous Side Effects
The FDA has received reports of consumers experiencing serious side effects from these types of supplements including severe headaches, chest pain, prolonged erections that required surgical interventions, and extreme blood pressure drops leading to hospitalizations.
The agency warned consumers to be wary of using products that are promoted for weight loss, quick pain relief, bodybuilding, and sexual enhancement. eBay responded to questions from media outlets by saying that harmful products are prohibited and are swept regularly from the online marketplace.
Only a Fraction of Tainted Products Are Identified
The FDA warns on its website that consumers who buy over-the-counter male enhancement products that they may contain unknown and varying quantities of untested and unstudied pharmaceutical ingredients, controlled substances, and prescription drug ingredients. Some of the fraudulent products contained excessively high doses and combinations of undisclosed ingredients.
It reports that more than 300 fraudulent products have been identified and noted that this is only a fraction of the tainted and dangerous products on the market.
Avoid OTC Drug Cocktails
The FDA reports that many of the hundreds of products it has tested contained high doses of prescription medications, such as one that contained 31-times the prescription dose of the active ingredient in tadalafil in combination with an unapproved antidepressant.
Some of the supplements have contained as many as six different prescription medications in them. The FDA warns that these doses have never been tested or studied and their dangers are unknown, but unsuspecting consumers are taking them.
Hidden Dangers
For some people, taking these tainted supplements can be life-threatening. For instance, people with diabetes, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, and heart disease are often prescribed medications that contain nitrates. If these patients consume tainted supplement, their blood pressure could bottom out. But these are also the same patients who may require treatment for erectile dysfunction, and these supplements pose severe health dangers to them.
